There are two broad ways of real money betting in roulette – inside bets and outside bets.
Outside bets have a better chance of winning, but the payout is lower. The opposite is true for inside bets.
There are six types of inside bets – straight up, street, split, corner, six line and trio.
The longest shot bet of these is the straight up bet.
Inside Bets
- Straight up means to bet on just one number. For example, you might put your money down on black 29. If the ball lands on black 29, you win. Straight up pays 35 or 36 to 1. For example, if you bet $1 on black 29, it would pay $35 or $36, depending on if the roulette board had 0 and 00, or just 0.
- Split is next. A split bet is when you take two adjoining numbers. For example, 32 and 33. Pays 17 to 1.
- Street and trio bets pay the next best. With a street bet, you are betting on all three numbers in a single horizontal line, such as 10/11/12 or 22/23/24. Street pays 11 to 1.
- With a trio bet, you are placing a bet on either 0/1/2 or 00/2/3. These are the only combinations in which the trio bet applies. Trio pays 11 to 1.
- Corner means you are betting on four different numbers in a square layout such as 25/26/28/29. Corner pays 8 to 1.
- Finally, six line is two street bets combined. You might bet on 16/17/18/19/20/21 for example. Six line pays 5 to 1.
Outside Bets
- Betting on 1 to 18. You are betting on numbers 1 through 18. Pays 1 to 1.
- Betting on 19 to 36. You are betting on numbers 19 through 36. Pays 1 to 1.
- Red or black. You are betting on either red or black showing up. Pays 1 to 1.
- Even or odds. You are betting on the number being either even or odd. Pays 1 to 1.
- Dozen bets. You are betting on one of three possibilities – 1 to 12, 13 to 24 or 25 to 36. Pays 2 to 1.
- Column Bets. Similar to a vertical bet, except you are betting on all numbers down a vertical line. For example, 1/4/7/10/13/16/19/22/25/28/31/34. Pays 2 to 1.
There are some additional bet types available in roulette.
En prison rule is a type of bet offered at some casinos. If the winning number is a green zero, you can either collect half your bet or leave it in place for the next spin. If you lose on the next spin, you lose the entire amount wagered.
Another type of alternative bet is La Partage. When the wheel spin comes up with zero, the dealer immediately divides all even money bets in half, keeping half for the house and returning one half to the player.
Keep in mind that only the even money bets are half refunded under La Partage rules. The other bets including column, section and individual bets are all automatic losses if the zero comes on the wheel.
